7460 Reflection

Yeah!!! Back to blogging.  I am excited that I have two more semesters to go.  This semester, and this school year, I have a new principal that is very supportive. This helped me to complete the tasks that were needed to complete for this course.  With conducting surveys and gathering data, I was able to see what my co-workers need to feel more comfortable with technology.  Conducting a professional development was scary but I did enjoy the experience.  My co-workers enjoyed it as well and they like the time to really play with technology and learn about more features of PowerPoint.  I do have plans to have more professional development on other things that could be useful for teachers and students. My next one will be how to use interwrite for new teachers as well as others who need to refreshment on the tool.

I am glad that this has given me an opportunity to have a more important role within my school.  Since the school did receive iPods, I was able to help the Media Specialist, my mentor, set the iPods up and assisted her with the training. I feel the door is opening for more opportunities in this field since technology is still yet to be discovered of the usefulness in the classroom.  I also feel that I need to share more about what I have learned thus far to others around the county.   Integrating Technology are one of the critical needs throughout the county.

Post Plan Learning Session: Part 2

I did finish the 5 day Learning Session knowing a little more about Differentiated Instruction is more of a practice to hit all levels of learners.  I did learn all about Turning Point and how to retrieve data that I may need.  I will be using it next school year so I don't have to rely the teachers to retrieve testing data.  I can create my own and hope it will achieve the same result.  As for assessment, everything plan will be based on any results to plan for the needs of the students to help them be successful.  I feel like I am going to be more prepared for the next school year.

Post Planning Learning Sessions: Part I

While everyone is finishing up the school year with their students, I am attending Post Planning Learning Sessions the county came up with to help enrich us in Differentiated Instruction.  The facilitators are educators who have  been observed or mastered the directions for DI.  The facilitators I have are great and vibrant.  I am learning new things with the technology we have in our schools but hardly ever used.  The one thing I was happy to share with other educators was about Glogster.  One of the facilitators was sharing the technology we should be using the next school year.  One was Prezi, which I will be exploring this week, and Glogster.  I shared my knowledge about Glogster and wrote my delicious site on the board.  I had to explain Delicious becasue the facilitator was looking at the url and asking if we can say that in schools.

I feel that I'm a step ahead of what the county wants to incorporate into the classrooms and I now feel valuable to this trend the county wants to push forward.  I'm hoping that I will be used more at my school as a technology leader or assist teachers in their technology oriented standard lesson.  I still have three more days of these Sessions.  I am hoping to share more and learn more to prepare for the next school year.

Field Experiences, Semester 2

Description: Creating a slideshow for the Basketball and Cheerleading Banquet.

Standards:  TF II F- Planning Designing Leaning Environments and Experiences
TF V D.- Productivity and Professional Practice

Hours: 3 hours

Reflections:  On March 31st, my was having its very first banquet for the basketball players and the cheerleaders.  This was the first year that we ever had a sports program.  One of the teachers wanted to create a type of slideshow or scrapbook.  I decided to take on the project, since I was the one who took the pictures.  I was able to crop the pictures in Kizoa and placed the pictures to show all the players in action without repeating the players back to back.  I played with some of the features the program has.  After I got the slideshow together, I tried to put it on a disk put for some reason it cut part of the slideshow off.  I decide to e-mail it to the teacher who was organizing the banquet as well as a few others.  I tried to open it at school and it didn't work.  I had to come up with a back-up plan.  On my work computer, I downloaded Smilebox weeks prior to the event, which works at school.  I had to recreate the slideshow hours before the banquet.  It only took my an hour to recreate the whole slideshow.  I e-mailed it to a few teachers and it worked.  I was not able to go the banquet due to class, but I did ask a few parents about the banquet as well as the teachers.  They liked the slideshow of the students throughout their entire 1st season of basketball.  This was a great way for the parents to see their student athletes in action from what they have learned from their coaches.  The won third place for the season.

Standards: TF V A- Productivity and Professional Practice

Hours- 5 hours

Reflection:  The last two weeks of March, one of my co-workers was interested about some of the tools I was learning.  She is currently working on her next degree that required to to gather information and document inventive learning she is working on with her students.  For an hour, I showed her Voicethread and we created a short Voicethread.  She did register to have her own account.  For another hour, I showed her Delicious.  She was very excited about all the features.  She created an account and added some sites to her page.  We spent most of the time working on her own county webpage.  It did not save the first time around but it did on the second.  I showed her the different features to create and she did her first blog on her webpage.  She is still currently adding more sites to her Delicious Page for her research and writing her paper.

Hours: 4 hours 40 minutes

Reflection:  Since I had taken classes on Basics of Design and Web Design, Dr. Julie Moore allowed me to present a lesson on web colors on March 3rd.  I created a powerpoint to demonstrate design and colors that would be safe to use for a website.  I spent 3 hours visually preparing the powerpoint by creating a few examples of websites by HTML codes.  I also did research for an hour to find website that would help to choose the right colors and  color combination that would assist for a theme.  I did play with each site for useablililty and simplicity to understand.  When the day came to demonstrate good website design for the class, I presented my creation, knowledge, and research.  It took 40 minutes to present to my classmates all about web colors.  The slide is now on my blog and it was uploaded to slideshare for all to see.

TF VI E- Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Resources
TF VII B- Procedures, Policies, Planning, and Budgeting  For Technology Environments

Hours: 4 hours  30 minutes

Reflections:  Voicethread was blocked at my school district so I had to follow the procedures of filling out the paperwork to access the tool.  After about a week and a half, I finally got access.  I decided to use the vocabulary they were learning to create a Voicethread with students in two of my Reading Classes.  The students created the pictures that would be uploading to the program.  The pictures they drew had to go with a vocabulary word that I gave them.  After the pictures were uploaded,  I allowed the students to put a voice with their pictures.  If they didn't like their voice or messed up, they redone their recording.  I allow the students to record thier voice on my computer.  Once every one in my small group finished recording, we watched it on the Whiteboard.  This was a great tool for review vocabulary.  The students want to recreate one again.

For the slideshow, I had all the students for my Writing Class create a picture for the slideshow and write a sentence that described how to take care of a pet.  I uploaded their pictures to Smilebox to create the slide show and added a pawprint background.  The students typed their sentence that went with their  pictures, usning my computer.  None of the classroom computer had Smilebox and the county IT would have to download it for us because of the administration password.  Once the slideshow was complete, I was able to add a song.  I played the slideshow on the Whiteboard for the students to see. The students were actually reading each sentence as it appeared.  The slideshow kept playing and the students were memorized by the class creation.

Description: How to create a Voki

Standards: TF I A & B- Technology Operations and Concepts

Hours: 20 minutes

Reflections:  I was reviewing my WebQuest at my work to see what elements of it worked and what didn't.  I was happy that my Voki was working.  Yes, I found something the district did not block.  I decided to show a few students students.  One of the students was a little freaked out that my voice was the voice of the cat.  So, I decided to show them how to create one.  I showed them the different characters and backgrounds.  I also showed how they record their voice.  Unfortuneatly, my work computer did not have an internal microphone.  So, I couldn't show them how it all came together, but they did enjoy the mini demonstration.

TF III C- Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum

Hours: 30 minutes

Reflections:  I saw a few score students in the computer lab working on their Greek project.  One student was trying to find pictures and placing it in Microsoft Word.  From experience, the pictures are place where a cursor is located.  There is no freedom to move them around and create a design feel to it.  I decided to assist her for her project.  I instruct her to go to Publisher.  I explained that she will be able to move the pictures around and the words to create a more appealing design.  She was able to understand some of the tools quickly.  I also told her that she can save the titles the same and it would save both because one was word and the other was publisher.  I can't wait to the final project when she is done.

Description: Trying to figure out the design of a WebQuest.

Standards: TF I B- Teachnology Operations and Concepts
TF II A- Planning and Designing Learning Enviroment and Experiences

Hours: 1 Hour

Reflections: While working on my WebQuest, I felt that the design was looking more like a lesson plan, after reviewing some of my classmates comments.  I talked to one of my co-workers who has done one before.  She showed me some examples on QuestGarden.  As she was trying to find some good examples for Science, she was explaining that it was more an individual or small group activity for the students to complete.  She did look at my WebQuest to see what I have completed.  She found some good examples for me to look at.  It look much simpler than what I was creating.  Without her help, my WebQuest would have taken me forever to complete.

Description: Showing off what I have learned and created.

Standards: TF I B- Technology Operations and Concepts
TF III A- Teaching , Learning, and the Curriculum

Hours: 1 Hour

Description:  Throughout the year, I try to show off the technology tools that I have learned.  I would show them to second grade and my mentor.  I have showed the slideshow, Voicethread, my webquest, etc.  I also show a second person about Delicious.  I did trouble shoot with my mentor about Voicethread who instruct me that I needed to fill out a form and turn it in to the principal to be signed.  I did e-mail my webquest to my ESOL team.  Only one commented on it.  Just sharing what I have learned with my peers, I am hoping they will be willing to learn about and using a technology tool for their class.  I guess I will see next school year if they want to learn more.

Finishing My Webquest

I have talked to one of my co-workers to get a better idea on the true meaning of a webquest.  I guess I haven't observed much or really looked at other webquests to get an idea of how to put it together.  I have changed the weekly assignments to weekly missions.  I am leaving my powerpoints but I will be adding my voice to it so the students can listen as they go through it.  I found more short videos and added on to my webquest.  I also added documents to it, which was very tricky.  I have added charts, a rubric, and a cerificate that can be printed it out.  Sorry if I'm using one of your ideas, Melissa, about adding a certificate.  I am taking out my Jeopardy game only because that was for the whole class to use.  I have added some sites that have activities for student to complete that will help the students to better understand how Matter can change.  I have also added technology elements for the students to complete: Glogster and PowerPoint.  About mid way, the students will complete a Glogster to show that they know the three types of Matter.  The PowerPoint they will be creating will sum up all the changes that Matter can change and it can change.

This whole experience is eye opening for me.  I believe the next time I complete another webquest, which I will, I will have a better plan of attack.  I will still use Kompozer as the program of choice.  I like the freedom of creating my own template and adding in different features that can set my webquest apart from the rest.

Update on My Webquest

I feel like I'm struggling with the whole concept of the official outcome of it.  After reading some of the comments from my presentation,  I feel that I am still not getting the concept of what a webquest truly is.  I will be changing it from a whole group webquest to a more individual or small group webquest.  I do remember thinking back from my educational classes.  The teacher explained a webquest but I don't think I still got the idea of it.  I wish I would have done one either in my educational class or when I was in my graphic design classes.  I am learning more about using some of the tools from the other class to help give my webquest flexibility for all to use.

As far as using Kompozer for my webquest, I like how it is coming together.  The only draw back is that I still have to rely on some of the html codes to make sure everything is working properly.  I will be happy to see the final outcome and will try to test it with my students.

Beginning My Webquest

I decided that I'm going to be a science webquest on Matter.  The unit actually takes up about 6-7 weeks on learning the three types of matter and how Matter can change.  I already have powerpoints that are done but I'm going to redo them to make it more uniform and put in my own photos.  I don't want to get in trouble with Creative Commons.  The students will record what they have learned about Matter and have some hands-on experiments to complete which will be diplayed with instructions.  As far as the ending outcome, I still have to work that out.  This is my very first webquest so I might need help.

I plan on using Kompozer to create my webquest.  I do love to challenge myself and I would like to create my own template.  Sometimes I don't like what other websites have to offer.  The uniform template many websites have is very restricting when trying to be creative.
