As our world is opening up to technology, we are always wondering how to evaluate the assignments the students do on the web. In one of my in-school professional learning, the instructor told us that everything can be evaluated through observation, class discussion, grading written assigments, and tests. When we through technology into the mix, what kind of grading system should we use? I found two different sites that ask the questions, like any reading or writing assignments about content, fact or opinion, research to back up facts, unanswered questions, and possible persuasion. There are also other questions that would help as well. 21cif.com has a rubric that is downloadable.

Blog
Blog is a tool for sharing our concerns about different issues we face in the world. Many people made comments on these issues with encourangement for those who are making a differences or giving ideas on how to solve the issues. Not all blogs have concerns. The 2nd Grade Duck Blog demonstrates the students opinion on the story of the missing duck. Not only students were commenting, other adults from around the world were commenting on how the project was inspiring. This was giving the students a chance to write a comment on another medium. The students can go back to the site and read about the comment they wrote a year from now, or five years from now. It stays on the expanding world of the internet.
When the students write, educators always have them write on paper about facts, opinions, fantasy, etc. The educators always tell the students about the formats of the writing, use standarize english, and think about the audience. Blogging doesn't have a true format, but it is a good idea to use standardize english and truely think about the audience when blogging. People are reading these blogs whether we know it or not. The ones we know are making comments.
Reading the blogs is just the same as reading a good book. There is drama or an important issue that needed to be address. Reading about "How to prevent another Leonardo da Vinci, " shows how we are restricting the creativity of students. When I was an art teacher, I can relate to the lost of creativity and imagination in the students. They just draw a simple basic picture, complain about doing any kind of assignments, and always whine about everything. Oh, the whining. Sometimes we can get the students to read books, but they do get more excited about doing any project on-line. Last semester, I was able to get the fifth grade students interested in creating a book critique. They read some of the critiques on the Wiki and some created their own critique about a book they read. This could work well with blogging. They can read each others blogs and critique or make a comment about what they have read. Reading anything is about encouraging to expand on what they have read.
I am hoping that many counties in the state of Georgia can see the positives of blogging. The students are reading comments, just like a book, article, or an exert. The students write comments, opinions or feelings on blogs. We are not wasting trees with this. So why do many districts want to stay in the past. Our students are moving on with technology whether we teach it or not. Let them blog. We as educators can teach how to be a safe blogger.

Voice Thread
Voice Thread is awesome. I like how you can draw on it and circle words or pictures. I can also see a good use for doodling too. : ) I want to start to create on it to get the big picture of its many uses. I would like to encourage the teachers at my school to use it as well. Showing the students that the teachers are working together to develop a lesson would be empowering. We can record our knowledge about the subject from many different views. The students can record about what they learned from the lesson and it becomes another way to grade them. I like the usefulness for art. This would be encouraging for students to use the vocabulary words to describe or critique a picture. I always wanted the students to critique artwork without having other students snickering at them.
For the ESOL students, this could help me to get the students write what they record. They can tell me anything, but writing what they say is challenging when they are still trying to learn how to spell words. The only question I have is having the time to create it and students using it.

Web 2.0
Todays students are more into video games, television, mp3s, computers and cell phones. They are not reading books, they are not doing homework, or they only think of school as a social party. Educators have lost the connection with students. Educators are still teaching the old fashion way with books, paper, and pencil. The students desire for more fun with learning through games and technology. The Educators are only concentrating on making sure the standards are being learned through the counties schedule, which is why we are not connecting with the students. Data, CRCT, and Standards are driving education. Where does technology fit in all of this? Some counties are encouraging teachers to use technology in the classroom to help create engage learning. Some counties are using Web 2.0 as a technology tool to help drive the learning of standards. As for my county, teachers are lacking the technology skills to have technology to be used as a tool. I want to break the cycle and continuously learn about all the technology tools there is to help students to make learning more engaging. I want learn more about Web 2.0 to make sure that I am able to learn how to use with my students.
Prediction for design and development as a technology leader
The reason I chose Instructional technology as my master is to learn and grow about using technology in the classroom. Now I see I have the potential to assist my fellow co-workers. I will be using any of my spare time to assist the teachers who want to expand on thier own knowledge to better help the students. With designing a website or a program to better help the students to master the skills they need, I will ensure the teachers can change how they can use it in thier classroom. I have one teacher who is interested about the tools I will be learning and it shows that I some teachers are interested in helping their students succeed with mastering the skills. I also plan on having technology available to the ESOL students. One of the ESOL teachers have a classroom set up in the newcomers center, and I do plan to help her in anyway possible to enhance the program. I am excited to be able to enhance and expand on any program we have through technology.
