Web 2.0

Todays students are more into video games, television, mp3s, computers and  cell phones.  They are not reading books, they are not doing homework, or they only think of school as a social party.  Educators have lost the connection with students.  Educators are still teaching the old fashion way with books, paper, and pencil.  The students desire for more fun with learning through games and technology.  The Educators are only concentrating on making sure the standards are being learned through the counties schedule, which is why we are not connecting with the students.  Data, CRCT, and Standards are driving education.  Where does technology fit in all of this?  Some counties are encouraging teachers to use technology in the classroom to help create engage learning.  Some counties are using Web 2.0 as a technology tool to help drive the learning of standards.  As for my county, teachers are lacking the technology skills to have technology to be used as a tool.  I want to break the cycle and continuously learn about all the technology tools there is to help students to make learning more engaging.  I want learn more about Web 2.0 to make sure that I am able to learn how to use with my students.

  1. As long as there are children using technology and a few teachers willing to embrace the technology first hand there is hope for the future. Let's face it standardized tests and the standards based curriculum is sticking around, I applaud you for wanting to make the change and break the cycle! You’re the type of teacher that will incorporate the must do's with the excitement of fresh technology- your students are blessed. Just remember, others are watching and willing to do something that has been completed successfully before, lead the way and facilitate the change.

  2. Finding the illusive engaging lesson. I feel is the goal of the teacher today. Students are the multimedia/multitasking learners. They listen to TV or ipods while doing homework. Check Facebook and Twitter while researching a project. The classrooms are not set up that way. Technology is not driving or even the passenger. It is in the trunk and only used when it is taken out. Many times I seem to run into the problem of not being able to use technology (or do a Lab) because we are pressed to stuff information into our students until testing. Sometimes a decision is made to use a new tool but training is not given or poorly done. Don't give up. Keep inserting the new ideas. At the end of the day we are teachers and we do what we do best...prepare the future.
